Drum Replacement Software?

Postby Suntower » Tue Jul 27, 2010 6:04 pm

This may sound totally stupid, but anyone here used drum replacers?

Typically what I do is play 'real' drums to get the parts I want to play and then 're-record' them using MIDI triggers and sample libs. This is mainly because I don't have all the kit one needs to close mic a set... plus the set isn't that great.

But assuming I get some mics, how do the replacers 'work'. I mean, I understand they'd be OK for boom-chick-boom-chick, but what about rolls, flams, side sticks, hi-hat sucks, ride bell vs. edge and so on? Do they even -work- on those sorts of thing and if so, how? Either there is some 'magic' I don't get or they probably aren't worth the time.

Please enlighten me!

TIA,

They do a few things:

Pro:
1. They can improve a poor sounding kit
2. They can provide hit consistency, in an un-consistent drummer
3. They can decrease bleed and increase separation
4. They are relatively inexpensive
5. You can create your own samples for triggering (this can come in real handy!)
6. You can buy 3rd party samples made for Pro's by the Pro's and they sound exceptional out of the gate

Cons:
1. They don't always track right (fills and flams)
2. They take some time to fine tune
3. Can be complex (especially when routing between say Drumagog and BFD)

If I had to recommend one to buy, it would by Drumagog. It's the one I use and it works great.
I usually bounce each individual channel that has Drumagog on it and make adjustments to the WAV. in the project, prior to mixdown.
Just because sometimes things can get off. But the plus side to buying Drumagog now is you get a free upgrade to the new one which is coming out shortly ane
is supposedly the "bees knees"

As you can see, the Pro's out weigh the Cons.

Get it!

I just got Slate's trigger, and it's great and quite easy to figure out. The triggering is almost perfect, and is a great way to add body to the single hits. This will not work on cymbals, hihats or overhead/room tracks.

This is probably not the best drumtrigger software on the market, but it works very well and is very easy to learn and use.
I just bought it myself last week and used it for three different drum recordings already. Love it!

Thanks. I watched their video and bought it. Maybe you get what you pay for but some of their other 'no-brainers' have been -really- good so I figure if nothing else, I'll learn how it all works.

Cheers!

Hey lhama, how well does the Slate Trigger really work?
I'm about to buy it (lots of metalstuff coming  ) as it gets lots of praise in the web. Is it really as precise as advertised?

This thing works great in conjunction with BFD!
Only problem is it's performance in WIN7 64bit is awful!!!
Freezes and locks up when you try to close it or add more than one input WAV

hm.. Strange, it works well here. Im also on win7 64bit, still havent experienced any problems yet, and I have used it quite alot lately. The "loading" time is quite long when I switch between multiple files, but thats all. maybe you should check the audio preferences if there is such an option in the program.
